Obituary For Robert "Bob" Ray Haan

Robert Ray Haan, was born September 26, 1941 in Bellingham, Washington to his parents Raymond and Virginia Haan. Bob peacefully passed away at the age of 83 on January 15, 2025 in University Place, Washington.

Bob grew up in the Geneva Community of Bellingham. He had many fond memories of growing up on the shores and waters of Lake Whatcom. After graduating from Bellingham High School in 1959, he attended Western Washington State College, and George Washington University in Washington D.C. While attending university in the Nation’s Capital, he ran the Senate elevator which he found to be a very exciting and rewarding experience. After four years at George Washington, he transferred to the University of Washington where he earned a degree in oceanography.

Bob first met his future wife, Margaret Evich, when he was in the 5th grade at Geneva Elementary School. They married on July 8, 1967 in Geneva, and six days later he entered the U.S. Army. After completing basic training, he and Margie moved to Fort Benning, Georgia for Bob’s further military training. After completing Officer Candidate School, Bob was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and assigned to a combat unit in Vietnam. During his time in the Army he attained the rank of Captain.

After his service in the military, Bob worked for three years as an oceanographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Seattle. He then changed careers and became a wealth advisor for Morgan Stanley. Bob truly loved his career with Morgan Stanley. But his favorite memories come from the time he was able to spend with his clients, many of whom became close friends. Bob loved staying active, but his favorite activity in life was fly fishing. Over the years he was able to travel the world, primarily to fly fish!

Bob will be remembered for his vibrant and fun personality, his love for family and friends, and his contributions to both his community and the sport of fly fishing through his involvement with Trout Unlimited. With a love for the arts, he also spent time on the board of directors of Symphony Tacoma. Bob is survived by his devoted wife Margie, his sister Carol Simonson and many nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him greatly.

A private service and celebration of life will be held later this summer on Bellingham Bay.
