Born in 1938 in Washington State, Marianna Vaughan grew up in idyllic and beautiful Sumner where she spent many summers picking raspberries for a local farm, later working at the local Dairy Freeze. Always an achiever, Marianna was an active Girl Scout, elected state treasurer for the Future Homemakers of America in 1954, and became a Daffodil Princess representing Sumner in 1955. She graduated with academic awards from Sumner High School in 1956. Marianna attended the University of Washington, majoring in mathematics, where she met and married John Temple. Always up for an adventure, Marianna moved to Japan, where her naval officer husband was stationed. She soaked up the local culture, learning how to make Kabuki dolls before she and John moved back to the states. After living briefly in Connecticut, they moved to South Carolina, where Marianna taught math at a high school. The couple then moved to California to raise their children. A loving mother, she instilled her sense of adventure in her three children by developing their passions for skiing, swimming, water skiing, traveling, and unicycle riding. Marianna worked at Stanford Research Institute as a mathematician deciphering radio communications bouncing off the ionosphere while putting her husband through Stanford Business School. The family moved to Orinda, California, where Marianna was active in many groups like AAUW (American Association of University Women), a local bridge club, and an investment club. She took classes at UC Berkeley and volunteered helping underprivileged folks with their taxes. The family then moved to Florida, eventually settling in Boca Raton. Marianna received her MBA from the University of Miami and became a CPA working for a local firm in Pompano Beach. After divorcing, she retired to Nevada, moving to Lake Tahoe where she continued to travel and enjoy hiking, skiing, and looking for wildflowers. Marianna loved to travel and has been to many countries and every state in the USA. She had more than one trip of a lifetime, including two special tours on the Air France Concorde SST circumnavigating Africa and South America, setting the commercial speed record between New York and Rio de Janeiro. Marianna made and completed a goal of visiting every Presidential Library with her close friends. She especially treasured time with her grandchildren and going on adventures with them all over the world including Australia, Scotland, Russia, and Norway. Marianna always had a special affinity for technology and loved learning about new inventions and scientific discoveries. She was loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Marianna passed away at the age of 83 in July 2022; she is survived by her sister Nancy Gundler, her three children, Teresa Long (son-in-law Kent), Will Temple (daughter-in-law Danielle) and Cindy Duncan (son-in-law Cameron), seven grandchildren, Alan, Natalie, Lachlan, Kieren, Genyss, James, and Max, as well as a large extended family that she adored. Marianna is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Genyss Vaughan, sister Betty Janson, and by granddaughter Nora Temple, who always had a special place in her heart. She is interned at the Sumner Cemetery in Sumner, Washington.
