Obituary For Harold Lloyd Havens

Harold Lloyd Havens, born on July 19, 1937 to Burton and Jacoba (Vanden Burg) Havens in Carson, North Dakota. He attended a country one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade and graduated from Flasher High School. While in high school, Harold was active in football and basketball. When he was 16 years old, he made his first big purchase – a custom-made saddle paid for with his earnings from breaking wild horses and trapping mink, muskrat, and beaver on the farm creek. He married his high school sweetheart, Luanne Cowan, on July 22, 1955. Harold worked as a ranch hand in Valentine, Nebraska before attending telegraph school in Salt Lake City, Utah. He became a telegraph operator in Selah, Ellensburg, Easton and then Lester, Washington and retired as a dispatcher for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Harold loved to hunt, fish and camp with his horses and mules. He was a master at fixing things and loved his animals. Harold enjoyed attending events for his children and grandchildren. In his later years, he loved spending time at the cabin he built in Idaho. Harold is preceded in death by his wife, Luanne, and his two sons, Jeff and Scott. He is survived by sisters, Clendora and Marilyn, his brother Alvin, his sons Tim (Janine), Butch (Jaime), daughters Sheryl, Debbie, his grandchildren, Garrett, Troy (Ashley), Stanley, Kyle, Kinsey, Luke (Julia), Aanya, Savannah and Kael, and great granddaughters, Elouise and Maren.

Thank you for being the best father that a daughter and grand daughter could ever ask for. You taught me many things and together with Mom, showed me what's truly important in life. I hope to pass that on to future generations in your honor.

I'm so thankful for having Harold an my Grampa. He was always there for me, and shared so many of his favorite pastimes with me. When I was young and after school was out for the year, I would go "help" him do hay and then we would take a week long horse camping trip in the mountains. Those were some of my favorite times that I will never forget. He would buy me a few root beers and packs of sunflower seeds for my saddle bags, and we would ride in many miles until we found a good spot to fish and camp. I remember many things, but perhaps the best part is hearing Grampa tell those stories to me and the family years later. He always had so many fascinating stories to share about growing up, living in Lester, hunting, fishing and horse riding. He had such a great life, and made such a positive impact on his wife, children and grandchildren. Thank you for teaching me how to make home smoked bacon, summer sausage and smoked fish. Thank you for taking me hunting and fishing for all of those years, and sharing memories at the cabin. Thank you for remembering my birthday every year, and being so kind and loving to your great grandchildren Maren and Elouise, they truly loved you and enjoyed being pulled by sled on the snowmobiles, and making ice cream at the cabin; a longstanding family tradition that we'll carry on. I am going to miss him so much, and thank God for the time I got to spend with him. He was always so calm and collected, and had a positive outlook on everything. May you Rest In Peace Grampa, we'll continue our carrying on in Heaven =*)
