Betty Jean Carleton-Long, 91, left us for Heaven May 9, 2021 from her residence at Franklin Place in Sumner WA. She was reunited in Paradise with her husband of 56 years Hulon O. Long, her sister Patricia Puckett, her son Jeffrey Robinson, grandson Whitney Smith, son-in law Roger Guise, parents and beloved grandparents and so many more friends and family. Left here to miss her are her children Terrie Mayfield, Randy Long, Lisa Long, Shawn Long, Robert Long, along with 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Betty’s full, long life began when born October 20, 1929 to Robert Carleton & Margaret Lucille Spalt in Alameda CA. She had one younger sister, Patricia, and beloved grandparents Philip and Margaret Spalt, who would later in childhood raise them. Betty graduated from Alameda HS with a deep love of art, music, literature and writing of which she would continue throughout her long life. Betty left the CA Bay Area after marrying USAF military airman Hugh Long in 1956. Throughout his 20+ years in the AF, Betty raised their children, took college courses, worked for Pan Am Airlines and after Hugh’s retirement in 1972 from the AF, they bought their first home in Yelm WA. Betty went back to college in 1978 and began a career as an Alcoholism Counselor, as had her husband. Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon were a deeply-rooted part of Betty’s life, marriage and work in the field of recovery. Both Betty and Hugh founded Getting Straight in 1971 while stationed in Japan which launched them in the recovery field of work and service for the rest of their lives. Betty was as intelligent as she was beautiful and remained a life-time political and social activist in addition to supporting many environmental and human rights issues: Green Peace, Humane Society, Amnesty International, International Children’s Fund, Southern Poverty Law Center, Audobon Society, Boys & Girls Clubs and many more. She loved nature, animals, gardening, flowers, theatre, movies, chocolate and Rocky Road ice cream. Her music collection covered all genres- especially rock, classical and big bands. Books were Betty’s friends and she read voraciously- magazines, novels, history, the classics – her walls covered by bookshelves. She painted for quite some time – generating many pieces. And together with Hugh, they both rescued cats and dogs throughout their retired lives. Betty was raised Catholic and continued to cultivate her faith throughout her life. She is loved and will not be forgotten. Donations can be made in her honor to any of the causes similar to or named above that were dear to her.
