Obituary For Alfred John Luberts Jr.

Alfred John Luberts, Jr., 86, of Puyallup, Washington, left us peacefully and into the loving arms of Jesus on February 7, 2025. Alfred was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and brother. Alfred will always be remembered for his kindness, his love for family and his faith.

Born on March 4, 1938, in San Diego, California, Alfred was the oldest of three children (sisters Patricia and Judi) born to Alfred Sr. and Ethel Earline Luberts. Mother “Earline” passed away when Alfred was 8 years old. Alfred’s father then married Ruth Gagnon, who had 3 daughters, Jean, Patty and Kathleen. Later, Michael was born, expanding the family to 7 children (2 boys and 5 girls). Another brother, Victor, was born to Alfred Sr.

Alfred did well in school and had a special interest in playing the saxophone in the school band. In his teenage years, Alfred held different Summer part-time jobs: walking horses at Longacres, picking in the Carnation strawberry fields and as a pinsetter at the local bowling alley. Alfred was also the editor of “The Chieftain” high school newspaper. Alfred graduated from Renton High School in 1956.

In 1957, Alfred joined the Army and met Woman Army Corp. Private Maria Gloria Perales at the Enlisted Club. Alfred was an Army bandsman providing entertainment during many military events and performances. Alfred married “Gloria” on July 9, 1957, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Alfred and Gloria had 3 children, Elaine, Jackie and “AJ” Alfred John Luberts, III. The Army moved the Luberts family around a lot. Alfred discharged from the Army in 1965 and began working at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Georgia learning about computers for the first time. Alfred was then hired as a computer operator for Boeing who moved the family to Washington State.

Alfred worked for many different companies as a computer programmer and went back to school at the University of Washington on his GI Bill. At about the same time, Alfred joined the Army Reserves. Alfred graduated with a BA in Business Administration from the University of Washington in 1976. Alfred and Gloria parted in 1980.

Alfred married Judy Williams on March 16, 1985, and they parted 21 years later.

Alfred retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1998 as a Master Sergeant (E8). During his 33-year military career, Alfred received 9 medals, including the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (2) and the Meritorious Service Medal (2), as well as the Expert Marksman Badge.

Alfred became a systems analyst and eventually was hired as a project manager for Darigold as his last position. In 2000, Alfred retired at the age of 62. Alfred also completed the H&R Block program and had a tax preparation business throughout his retirement years.

On July 1, 2006, Alfred married Darlene J. Smith. Alfred and Darlene had been high school friends and reconnected at a reunion. Alfred and Darlene married on the steps of Renton High School and were married 18 years at the time of his passing.

In 1993, Alfred submitted his petition for Masonry at Ashler Lodge No. 121 Bothell and became a Master Mason on April 20, 1994. Alfred later joined the Green Lake Lodge and became a Worshipful Master at Green Lake in 1999. In 2001, Alfred joined the Walter F. Meier Lodge of Research No. 281. Alfred became a Senior Warden in December 2005 and Worshipful Master at Walter F. Meier Lodge in December 2006. Alfred joined the Corinthian Lodge No. 38 in November 2009. From 2010 to 2011, Alfred served as Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Cryptic Masons of Washington. Royal Arch York Rite, the Royal and Select Masters of Washington. Alfred affiliated with the Steilacoom Lodge in January 2022. Alfred also became Worshipful Master of the Corinthian Lodge in 2022. Alfred received many awards throughout his years, including the Hiram Award at Greenwood Lodge; the Grand Master Award in January 2007; 10-year service award at Corinthian Lodge in November 2012 and a 30 years’ service award at Green Lake Lodge on April 20, 2024. Alfred was a Very Excellent Companion for the Royal Arch Masons of Washington and current member of Tacoma Chapter #4 RAM. Sir Knight, Past Eminent Commander of Seattle Commandery #2 and Affiliate Past Commander of Ivanhoe Commandery #4. Past Most Illustrious Grand Master of Royal and Select Masters of Washington.

Throughout Alfred’s life, he was a talented musician playing the soprano, alto and tenor saxophone as well as clarinet. Alfred was a member of many different bands in his life including dance bands, community bands and he enjoyed playing his saxophone at church services. Alfred also sang in the church choir.

Alfred was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Earline Luberts, stepmother, Ruth M. Luberts, father, Alfred John Luberts, Sr., sister, Kathleen J. Luberts, brother, Michael S. Luberts, Paternal Grandparents John H. and Mary C. Luberts and Maternal Grandparents, John E. and Grace Corbitt.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Darlene Luberts, and his children, Elaine Kittelson (Mike), Jackie Jones (Scott), and AJ Luberts III, sisters Patricia Gamby (Jack), Judi Severson (Truman), Jean Livingston (Dennis), Patty Tissue (Dennis) and brother Vic Peterson (Sharrie). Stepchildren Jeanie Mayr (Gary), Roger Davidson, Suzy King and Mary Wells (Scott). Alfred is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Terry Dizard, Andrew Dizard, Nikki Varela, Luis Lorca Merono III, Antonio Lorca-Merono, Jason Jones, Amber Kittelson, Ashley Luberts, Brittany Kittelson, Cierra Luberts, and 8 great-grandchildren, Alex Dizard, Ryan Dizard, Sareesa Livi-Dizard, Caleb Dizard, Logan Dizard, Casen Clark, Amariah Ostler, Maci Jones, Rhowynn Sefton and Mario Merono.

On Friday, March 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. a service to celebrate Alfred’s life will be held at the Living Word Lutheran Church in Graham, Washington followed by a reception. All are welcome.

On Friday, March 7, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. military honors and interment will be presented at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington. All are welcome.

On Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. there will be a Masonic Memorial Service followed by a reception at the Best Western Plus in Puyallup, Washington. All are welcome.
