David Lyle Wakefield, 75, born May 3, 1949, in Puyallup, WA, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on July 28, 2024, in Federal Way, WA.
Despite his professional achievements, Dave’s true passion was his family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, and friend. Dave was married to the love of his life, Jeri, for nearly 54 years. He is survived by his children Denise (Steve) Bennett, Daenette McClure, Danielle (Dwayne) Mase, and David Wakefield. He was a proud grandfather to 10 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 18 great-grandchildren. Dave was part of a large, extended, and loving family. He is also survived by his mother, Lorraine Wakefield, and his sister, Dixie (Danny) Jones. He was preceded in death by his father, Ted Wakefield, who passed on January 2, 1994.
Dave’s dedication to the fire service spanned 37 years, during which he made significant contributions to his community. He joined the Lake Tapps Fire Department/Pierce County District 22 (an EPFR legacy department) in 1977 and was hired as a career firefighter in 1981. Dave rose through the ranks to become Assistant Chief, overseeing the Training and Operations Division. His work included penning several guiding documents for the department, such as the Standards of Cover Deployment Plan and the Cooperative Training Project: Lake Tapps & Bonney Lake Fire.
Dave’s leadership extended beyond his department. He led the Emergency Management Committee for the Pierce County Chiefs Association, developing the Fire Resource Plan, which became the catalyst for the State Fire Mobilization Plan. By 1991, Dave found his niche as Assistant Chief in charge of Emergency Management and Training. He retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service. His contributions to the fire service and his community will be remembered and cherished.
A Celebration of Life to honor retired East Pierce Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Dave Wakefield is scheduled for August 13, 2024, at 11 AM at the Washington State Fair Events Center Agriplex Building (1404 5th St SW, Puyallup, WA).
